Birmingham Review Course 2024 | Diaphragm Pathologies
Currently in its 32nd year, the Birmingham Review Course is the longest-running course in the cardiothoracic specialty. The 2025 course promises an immersive learning experience featuring didactic lectures and interactive seminars on cardiac and thoracic topics, along with opportunities to engage with an international faculty. The 2025 Birmingham Review Course will take place from September 11–13, 2025.
At the 2024 Birmingham Review Course, Dr. Hazem Fallouh, a consultant thoracic surgeon at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, presented on “Diaphragm Pathologies.” In his presentation, he discussed the anatomy of the diaphragm, including its arterial and venous supply, as well as its nerve connections. Dr. Fallouh covered various congenital defects and highlighted the differences between early and late hernias.
He also reviewed the criteria for diaphragm plication, paralysis of the diaphragm, and explained the video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) approach. Additionally, he introduced the dual-cavity double crown mesh repair Birmingham technique and showed live video footage to illustrate the procedure.
