At the culmination of years of formal training, cardiothoracic surgery residents are faced with the reality of entering individual practice. Results of a 50 year experience with surgery for cortriatriatum sinister were summarized. A mix of infants and adults underwent treatment, consisting of membrane excision on CPB. 10 year survival was 83%, and all patients were in NYHA class I or II at follow-up.

This study compared early and intermediate biventricular function after early arterial switch in 26 infants and 20 age-matched controls. At 1 year LV performance was similar in ASO and controls, whereas RV systolic and diastolic function remained impaired. This stresses the need for ongoing monitoring of RV function after ASO.

In this manuscript, the authors describe their findings after reviewing 27 young patients (between 7 and 30 years of age) who had undergone aortic valve replacement with two types of bovine pericardial biological prosthesis: Mitroflow® LXA (15 patients) and PERIMOUNT Magna® and Magna Ease® (12 patients) valves.

This video shows a teenager with a large neo-aortic root aneurysm and severe aortic valve regurgitation following a Ross procedure, which was treated with a valve-sparing aortic root replacement. The case also highlights the intra-operative management of inadvertent aortic injury during reentry in the setting of severe aortic regurgitation.
