Background
Dr Andrew Choong is a vascular, endovascular, and aortic surgeon based in Singapore. He is the Founder and Medical Director of the Asian Aortic & Vascular Centre, a private practice established on 1 June 2023, dedicated to the full spectrum of vascular, endovascular, and complex aortic surgery. He continues to collaborate with leading tertiary centres in Singapore and abroad.
Prior to founding his private practice, Dr Choong served as Senior Consultant in Vascular, Endovascular, and Aortic Surgery at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS), and held a concurrent academic appointment as Associate Professor of Surgery at the National University of Singapore (NUS). During his tenure, he led complex aortic programs, advanced minimally invasive endovascular techniques, and contributed to training and mentorship within the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Dr Choong graduated from Imperial College London (MBBS 2003), completed his higher vascular surgical training on the St Mary’s / North West Thames rotation of the London Deanery, and obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT, UK) in 2014. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Eng) the same year.
He subsequently undertook a fellowship in advanced endovascular surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Queensland, Australia, and super-specialised training in complex thoracoabdominal aortic surgery—open, hybrid, and endovascular—at the Imperial Vascular Unit, St Mary’s Hospital, London.
Before relocating to Singapore, Dr Choong was a Consultant in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at King’s College Hospital, London. He has also held academic appointments as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland and Senior Lecturer at Griffith University, Australia.
Dr Choong’s accolades include the H. J. Windsor Prize (Royal College of Surgeons of England), the Professor William Burnett Research Fellowship (University of Queensland), and the Fellowship European Board of Vascular Surgery Gold Medal for the highest overall examination performance in 2014.
An active clinician-scientist, Dr Choong has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and invited articles and has delivered more than 150 international conference presentations. His academic interests include aortic pathology, endovascular innovation, outcomes in thoracoabdominal repair, and AI in vascular surgery.
A passionate educator, he previously served on the faculty of the London Postgraduate School of Surgery, teaching vascular and endovascular techniques to core and higher surgical trainees. He has been recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh with Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Training for his teaching excellence.
Dr Choong plays an active role in professional societies and education. He is previous Vice-President and Founding Member of the Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons of Singapore (SVESS), former Chairman of the Vascular Section of the College of Surgeons, Singapore, and a FEBVS Examiner for the European Board of Vascular Surgery.
He remains deeply committed to advancing vascular and aortic surgery in Asia through international collaboration, training, and research.
