Research
Professor Dougenis was born in Aegaleo city, Athens, in 1954 and graduated from Athens University School of Medicine in July 1978. He performed his Army and rural medical service (1978-81), and subsequently trained in General Surgery. He obtained the Greek Board of General Surgery in 1985, following which he worked as an attending General Surgeon in Patras University Hospital for one year. He received his PhD in 1987 from Patras Medical School. In 1986, he was appointed as a Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery (CTS) at the Royal Infimary of Edinburgh (Mr.Walbaum, Mr. Cameron) and continued his training in Glasgow Royal Infirmary (Prof. Wheatley) and completed in Newcastle Cardiothoracic Centre as a Registrar and Senior Registrar in 1989, with Mr. Dark, Mr. Colin Hilton and Mr. Hedley-Brown as his mentors. During his work in Newcastle, he participated in heart and lung transplantation surgery and working for Mr. J Dark, now Professor of CT Surgery in Newcastle Medical School, he also did several transplant runs. Coming back to Patras, Prof Dougenis, after obtaining the Greek Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery, started working as a Consultant CT Surgeon and established in the periphery of Greece, the 1st Cardiothoracic Unit, commencing, within the Department of Surgery, the first Thoracic and closed Cardiac procedures outside Athens and Thessalonica in November 1989.
In 1992 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in CTS and 9/1995 to 11/1996 with a sabbatical leave, he further trained in aortic surgery with Professor NT Kouchoukos in Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He also had the opportunity to work with Dr. J Cox and Dr. A Patterson during the same period. In 1999 he became an Associate Professor of CTS, and as a visiting professor with a leave of absence, he worked in Edinburgh’s Cardiothoracic Centre (9/2000- 4/2001) with Mr. W. Walker, Mr. Prasad and Mr. Mankad.
Prof. Dougenis has been the founder and Director of the Department of CTS in Patras’ Medical School from 1999 until 2017. He also served as the Director of the Section of Surgery in Patras Medical School between 2005 and 2006. He was a co-founder of the Advance Trauma Life Support ATLS course in Greece, having been trained in Fargo, North Dakota, USA in 1993. In 1998 he qualified for the European Board in Cardiothoracic Surgery and became the National Delegate of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (1999-2001) and member of the Membership Committee of the Association. Prof Dougenis was elected and served as a Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and Personnel of the University of Patras between 2006 and 2010. During this period, he prepared and signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the Johns Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore. He was also elected member of Western Greece Region Council, and founded the Committee of Research, Education and Innovation and served as its first President. He is married to Dina Tiniakos, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology, Director of the Department of Pathology, Areteion University Hospital, Medical School, Athens University, and is the father of three children, Eftychia, Jason and George.
Professor Dougenis has been the Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, at Patras Medical School, since 1999 when the Department was founded. He has got a wide experience in both Adult Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery having performed some surgical procedures for the first time in Greece. He has been awarded with several awards and national prices. He has published 148 peer reviewed papers (PubMed 2024) and has got more than 5645 citations , h-index 39 (Google Scholar 2024). He has presented and been invited to lecture in more than 250 national and international meetings, and is a member of many international and national medical associations. He also served as the president of the Cardiac Surgery Section of the Hellenic Cardiology Society and was the President of the Hellenic Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons from 2012 to 2014. In 2014, he founded the “World Society of the Hellenic Cardiothoracic Diaspora” and since then he serves as the General Secretary. In November 2016 he was elected Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and since 22/5/2017 has been the Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at “ATTIKON” University Hospital, Medical School Athens University. Between 2012 and 2020 he served as the Chair of the examination Committee for the Hellenic Board of CT Surgery. He has performed more than 4.500 Cardiac and Thoracic procedures. He has been a Professor Emeritus after his retirement in August 2021.
