Dr. Williams graduated as a decorated student from Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. He was the N.C. High School state champion in tennis four times. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. He graduated with honors in biology. He was the Ivy League Player of the Year in tennis and an Academic All-American. He was awarded the David A. Benjamin Award, the Leon Lapidus Award, and the Richard Swinnerton Trophy from Princeton University. His Princeton thesis mentor was Dr. Rosemary Grant. He enjoyed a brief stint in professional tennis before matriculating to Vanderbit Univ. Medical School in Nashville, TN. He was inducted into the Sigma Xi scientific research society. He completed an internship in general surgery at Duke University. He was awarded the W. Glenn Young award for most outstanding junior surgical resident. He completed a cardiovascular research fellowship with advanced postdoctoral training including a master's of health science. He served as Chief Fellow of the Duke Clinical Research Institute under Dr. Eric Peterson, the first surgeon elected to this honor. He completed his general surgery training with Duke University Health under Dr. Allan Kirk with time at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Dr. Williams served as chief resident in general surgery and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. He scored the 98th percentile on the American Board of Surgery in-training exam. Dr. Williams completed a cardiovascular and thoracic surgical residency under Dr. Thomas D'Amico at Duke University. Dr. Williams served as invited reviewer for multiple prestigious medical journals and authored over sixty major articles in the field of surgery during this time. He lists Dr. Peter Smith as his mentor in cardiac surgery and clinical research. Dr. Williams scored the 100th percentile on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in-service examination during his final year of training, the highest mark in the country. Dr. Williams is a nationally-renowned leader in cardiac surgery and quality. He has performed over 1000 adult cardiac operations. Dr. Williams serves as the Executive Medical Director of Heart and Vascular for WakeMed Health and Hospitals in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C.
