Background

Michael Madani, MD , is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon who is an expert in performing a wide variety of complex cardiac procedures, including pulmonary endarterectomy, complex valvular and revascularization procedures, heart and lung transplantation, as well as robotic and minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery. One of the most experienced PTE surgeons in the field, Dr. Madani performs the largest number of PTE procedures in the world and has been instrumental in starting multiple PTE programs around the world. Dr. Madani serves as a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division
of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center - Surgery at UC San Diego Health.

Research

In his research at UC San Diego, Dr. Madani collaborates with other researchers in Surgery/Cardiothoracic Surgery and in the Division of Cardiology in the UC San Diego Department of Medicine. He recently reported the results of a study of the use of Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) after operation with and without cardiopulmonary bypass, and outcomes of pulmonary endarterectomy for treating extreme thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He is a co-investigator in a study of a drug treatment for patients who have chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. He is also an investigator in a United States multicenter study devoted to establishing and maintaining a data registry on acute myocardial infarction with profound cardiogenic shock supported with ventricular assist devices.

Additional Educational Information

Dr. Madani received his medical degree from University of Toronto in Canada and then undertook his general surgery training at the Berkshire Medical Center/University of Massachusetts Medical School, before completing his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at UC San Diego. He is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery. He was named UC San Diego Physician of the Year and has repeatedly been listed in San Diego Magazine’s “Top Docs”, as well as “Americas Top Doctors” lists.
