Insulin resistance and nitric oxide metabolism in non-diabetic patients undergoing cardiac surgery

Hypothesis: Abnormalities in nitric oxide metabolism (quantified with levels of Dimethylarginine Dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) and Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA) activity) are correlated to levels of insulin resistance; and the level of insulin resistance and derangement of nitric oxide pathways impact on morbidity after cardiac surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass in adult patients.
