The AATS and the AATS Foundation offer opportunities for surgeons at all levels of their careers. Here are some of the scholarships, awards, and competition opportunities that may interest you and members of your team:

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEONS

Thoracic

Jack A. Roth Fellowship
Thoracic oncology surgeons who have recently completed their training can spend up to four weeks of observational learning within the Department of Thoracic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. One international fellow will be awarded $15,000, or two North American fellows will be awarded $7,500 each to defray travel and living expenses. Apply by December 1, 2018.

F. Griffith Pearson Fellowship
General thoracic surgeons who have recently completed their residency can continue to develop their surgical proficiency by training in a North American institution for six to eight weeks with a $9,000 grant. Apply by December 1, 2018.

Surgical Robotics Fellowship
Be one of 35 general thoracic surgeons to take part in a two-day advanced training course at Intuitive Surgical's Atlanta, Georgia, USA facility on their Da Vinci System with a $2,500 stipend. Apply by February 1, 2019.

Cardiac

Denton A. Cooley Fellowship
A North American cardiothoracic surgeon will be awarded $5,000 to participate in a four-week educational program at the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Apply by December 1, 2018.

Travel Awards
International cardiac surgeons receive up to $2,000 to attend the AATS 99th Annual Meeting. Apply by February 1, 2019.

RESIDENTS/MEDICAL STUDENTS

Summer Intern Scholarship
North American first- and second-year medical students who are in cardiothoracic surgery will be awarded $2,500 to spend an eight-week summer placement within an AATS member’s cardiothoracic surgery department. Apply by December 15, 2018.

Timothy J. Gardner Visiting Professorship
Residents interested in hosting a cardiothoracic surgical expert can let their program directors know that ACGME-approved cardiothoracic surgery residency institutions can receive up to $10,000 to facilitate a lecture from a prominent AATS member on a topic of interest. Apply by December 20, 2018.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident Poster Competition/Resident Case Report Competition
Residents can share their research and experience at the AATS Annual Meeting. Submit by January 15, 2019.

Member for a Day
North American medical students, general surgery residents, up to third year integrated cardiothoracic surgery residents (I-6) and members of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) can gain a better understanding of the specialty by shadowing an AATS Member at the meeting. Apply by January 15, 2019.

SURGICAL TEAM

Perioperative/Team-Based Care Poster Competition
Members of cardiothoracic surgical teams can present their research at the AATS Annual Meeting. Submit by January 15, 2019.
