As a part of the 2023 Australian Thoracic Aortic Symposium, Dr. Joe Coselli presented on his methods for open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Dr. Coselli is a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Since a substantial number of patients presenting to a Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic either smoked in the recent past or continue to do so, it is important to make sure that the patient stops smoking as soon as possible to improve their treatment outcome.  The emphasis should be on improvement of treatment outcome and future health improvement.

Buttressing suture/staple lines in thoracic surgery has been shown to promote healing and prevent breakdown, especially in situations where the native tissues have been compromised.  There are a wide variety of tissue flaps that have been used within the chest ranging from pleura, muscle, to omentum.

Epiphrenic diverticuli are acquired mucosal outpouchings protruding through the muscular wall of the distal 10 cm of the esophagus. Most are associated with an underlying esophageal motility disorder.
