The association of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality with optimism was assessed in this meta-analysis. Optimism was associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular events (ROR 0.65) and a decrease in all-cause mortality (RR 0.86). Mechansims have yet to be identified.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair began in Houston, Texas, with  pioneer surgeons such as Drs Michael E. DeBakey, Denton A. Cooley, and E. Stanley Crawford. Their early attempts to repair TAAA were complicated by risk of renal and spinal cord ischemia and difficulty in reattaching the branching vessels of the thoracoabdominal aorta.

This review included 55 publications covering 141 cohort studies.  The authors found that the relative risk of stroke associated with smoking just one cigarette a day was 1.25 to 1.31, and for coronary artery disease it was 1.48 to 1.57.  There is no safe level of smoking.
