This multicenter study analyzes the utility of a "Top Gun" competition in promoting simulator use and improving technical skills among 1st-year CT Surgery residents. A coronary anastomosis simulation module was sent to most 1st-year residents in the U.S. Fifteen residents submitted baseline and final videos for evaluation.

Provocative study that analyzes lower body perfusion in a porcine model during cardiopulmonary bypass with an actuated IABP in place to effect pulsatile perfusion. Parameters of distal perfusion including measurement of pressures and microsphere perfusion indicate that flow distal to the balloon pump may be impaired.

This paper reviews the various techniques of 3D bioprinting with special attention to generation of tubes to be used as artificial blood vessels.
Preoperative Methylprednisolone Enhances Recovery After Endovascular Aortic Repair: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial
August 14, 2014
This double-blind placebo-controlled trial involved 153 pts undergoing elective endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, of whom half received methylprednisolone preoperatively. The intervention reduced the systemic inflammatory response from 92% to 27%, plasma IL-6 was decreased by 90%, and CRP, body temperature, IL-8, and TNF were also reduced. MMP-9

Good news for lovers of dark chocolate. In this randomized study of 20 pts with peripheral arterial disease, walking distance and maximal walking time were evaluated 2 hr after ingestion of either dark chocolate or milk chocolate in a cross-over design. Dark chocolate ingestion was associated with an 11% increase in distance and a 15% increase in t
Preoperative Atrial Fibrillation Increases Risk of Thromboembolic Events After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation
October 7, 2013
This study of 389 pts receiving a continuous flow LVAD evaluated the risk of thromoembolic (TE)complications associated with preop AF. TE occured in 25% of pts; freedom from TE at 2 years was 46% in those with AF and 72% in those without AF (p<0.001). AF did not affect late survival.

A robotic technique is described for first rib resection for Paget Schroetter Disease or “effort thrombosis” of the subclavian vein that allows for en bloc resection of the offending portion of the first rib while minimizing the risk of neurovascular injury.
