Associate Professor Doa El-Ansary is a Physiotherapist and functional anatomist, with extensive clinical and research experience in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal physiotherapy . Doa has worked in private practice, public and private hospitals settings in addition to holding teaching posts at the University of Melbourne, Australian Institute of Sport; University of Sydney and the University of Canberra. She was part of the inaugural academic team of the Doctor of Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne and the Master of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra. Doa has a PhD in Physiotherapy and publications specific to postoperative management, cardiac rehabilitation, ultrasound and quality of recovery. Doa is a member of the founding committee that developed “Heart Online”, a web-based toolkit for cardiovascular health and rehabilitation.

Other Interests

Research interests include: cardiac surgery; physiological adaptations to exercise in bone and muscle; ultrasound imaging; sternal closure; postoperative recovery and patient reported outcomes; differential diagnosis and management of chest wall pain.

Research

Doa is a leader in postoperative management following cardiac surgery research pioneering ultrasound measurement of sternal micromotion and bone healing to validate the safety and feasibility exercise and rehabilitation of cardiac surgery patients . Her PhD research established Physiotherapy guidelines for the diagnosis and management of sternal instability following cardiac surgery. Doa is a past recipient of a University of Melbourne Career Interruption Fellowship that evaluated driving after cardiac surgery and is a CIA on a large RCVT funded by Zimmer Biomet in Cardiac Surgery. Doa has been recognised nationally and internationally for her clinical research with awards from the USA, Europe and Australia. Doa is an accredited supervisor of research higher degree and has supervised numerous PhD projects in acute postoperative cardiac surgery, lung transplant and cardiac rehabilitation that target all domain recovery.
