Program Information

  • Traditional (including 4+3) program
  • Two Residents accepted per year

Additional Curriculum Information

Our program allows for separate rotations in cardiac, thoracic and congenital in each of the 3 resident years. In addition, during the 3rd and final year, Chief residents have the opportunity to choose two months of elective rotations to focus on their respective tracks either on site or at outside locations. We do not have a designated number of individual positions within each track as all residents receive exposure to all aspects of cardiac, thoracic and congenital surgery.

UT Southwestern has a 3 year traditional program as well as an internal 4/3 program. Our teaching platforms in minimally-invasive valve repair, trans-catheter aortic valve implantation, mini-incision LVAD implantation and transplant allow our residents to stay up to date with our rapidly changing field.

Unique Program Components

Several of our residents have been able to attend outside clinical rotations both within the U.S. and International. Many of our residents have submitted research posters and presentations at National and International meetings. In December, 2014 we opened our new 424 bed hospital, William P. Clements, Jr. University Hospital and are currently expanding this to 460 beds. We continue to develop and implement milestones to expand the knowledge of our residents and have achieved continued accreditation through the ACGME.
