ASAIO 2025 | Aortic Pulsatility Index Predicts Post VA-ECMO Survival

Friday, September 5, 2025

In June 2025, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs assembled leading cardiothoracic surgeons to share insights and expertise on advanced topics in cardiothoracic surgery. Watch for more ASAIO 2025 videos in the coming weeks.

At the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) 2025 Annual Conference, Dr. Clauden Louis, cardiothoracic surgeon at the Cardiothoracic Surgery BayCare Medical System in Florida, gave a presentation titled “The Aortic Pulsatility Index Is Associated With Increased Prognostic Implications of Survival at 24 Hours Post VA-ECMO Decannulation and Survival to Discharge From Hospital.”

Dr. Louis provided a comprehensive overview of the study’s background, which encompassed the methods employed, the hypothesis formulated, the demographics of the participants, and the results obtained. He also delved into the history of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), highlighted key predictors of successful veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO), and discussed prior successful indices, specifically the pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi).
