Currently in its 32nd year, the Birmingham Review Course is the longest-running course in the cardiothoracic specialty. The 2025 course promises an immersive learning experience featuring didactic lectures and interactive seminars on cardiac and thoracic topics, along with opportunities to engage with an international faculty. The 2025 Birmingham Review Course will take place from September 11–13, 2025.
At the 2024 Birmingham Review Course, Dr. Moninder Bhabra, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at New Cross Hospital, delivered a presentation titled “Mitral Valve Surgery.”
He highlighted the advantages of mitral valve repair techniques, including annuloplasty, degenerative repairs, and leaflet and triangular resection. Dr. Bhabra also explored annuloplasty rings and discussed complex procedures such as quadrangular resection with height reduction and slide plasty, as well as the use of neochordae. Additionally, he addressed anterior leaflet prolapse, chordal transfer, and mitral valve annuloplasty in cases of severe chronic ischemic mitral regurgitation (CIMR). His presentation included insights on predictors of recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) and rheumatic disease.
