Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery: An Interview With Patrick Perier

At the 2025 Endoscopic Cardiac Surgeons (ECS) Club Annual Meeting, CTSNet Senior Editor Dr. Lorena Montes spoke with Dr. Patrick Perier, chairman of the ECS Club and staff surgeon at the Herz und Gefäss Klinik in Bad Neustadt, Germany, about minimally invasive mitral valve surgery.  

They discussed the importance of mentorship and the valuable lessons one can learn from mentors, as well as the evolution of cardiothoracic surgery in Germany. Dr. Perier shared insights on the use of Gore-Tex sutures in minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and elaborated on the “respect rather than resect” approach. They also addressed the paper Dr. Perier authored on this topic and the process behind its creation. Additionally, Dr. Perier discussed his professional background, highlighting the various institutions where he has worked, the mentors who have influenced his career, and the different positions he has held throughout his journey.
