Training in Low-Income Countries: An Interview With Drs. Farkas and Gyan

At the 2025 European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting, CTSNet senior editors set out to interview the most knowledgeable CT surgeons from around the world. Watch for more interviews from the meeting. 

At the 2025 European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) Annual Meeting, CTSNet Senior Editor Cristina Ruiz Segria spoke with Drs. Emily Farkas, Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery and Associate Director of Global Health in Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, and Baffoe Gyan, Director of Medical Affairs at the University of Ghana Medical Center, about training in low-income countries.  

They discussed collaborating with societies and organizations to address the key issues faced by low-income countries, such as access to care and education about rheumatic heart disease. They also examined how partnerships with these organizations can help train surgeons and how the University of Ghana Medical Center has evolved. Furthermore, they highlighted their future focus and hopes for advancement, along with the Francis Fontan Fund.
