AATS Foundation Scholarship Opportunities

The AATS Foundation is pleased to offer the following opportunities that provide recipients with access to surgical mentorship, surgical training, and research support. All application deadlines are December 1 unless otherwise specified.

                                                                                                                                                                              

 

Multi-Specialty

AATS Foundation Cohn Lectureship

Awards $10,000 to an ACGME-approved cardiothoracic residency program in order to provide honorarium to a prestigious AATS lecturer for their participation in an impactful presentation.

AATS Foundation Equity Award
Provides funding for up to three years for early to mid-career women and faculty underrepresented in medicine (defined by the AAMC) to develop the foundations for successful careers in academic cardiothoracic surgery.

Summer Intern Scholarship

Provides first- and second-year medical students with an eight-week summer internship in an AATS member’s cardiothoracic surgery department.

Valerie Rusch Mentored Career Development Award

Provides training, mentorship, or research support for women cardiothoracic surgeons and the development of cardiothoracic expertise in low-to-middle-income-countries.

 
Research

Alain Carpentier Honoring Our Mentors Program

Supports young surgical scientists for up to two years for original translational and clinical research to promote treatment advances in valvular heart disease.

Cardiac Surgical Resident Investigator Award

Supports surgical residents to conduct research in the laboratory of an established cardiac surgical investigator in the amount of $40,000 annually for up to two years.

David J. Sugarbaker Surgical Resident Investigator Award

Supports surgical residents to engage in cancer research in the laboratory of an established thoracic surgical investigator in the amount of $40,000 annually for up to two years.

AATS Foundation Research Scholarship

Supports North American surgeons with a two-year grant of $80,000 each year to pursue research, training, and clinical experience.

Surgical Investigator Award

Provides $50,000 annually to support innovative clinical or translational research by young cardiothoracic surgeons for up to two years.

 

 Adult Cardiac

James L. Cox Fellowship in Atrial Fibrillation Surgery
Affords newly graduated cardiothoracic surgeons the opportunity to improve their atrial fibrillation techniques at a host institution.

Matthew Gerdisch Fellowship in Arrhythmia Surgery

Offered to graduating cardiothoracic fellows or junior surgeons who seek to develop exceptional skills and knowledge in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and become future leaders in the field.

 

Thoracic

Thoracic Surgical Robotics Fellowship

Familiarizes North American senior residents and fellows focused in thoracic surgery with the da Vinci robotics system during advanced training. Awardees who complete the fellowship are eligible to participate in an Advanced Lobectomy Course.
