The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of 88 patients that received methylene blue (MB) for refractory vasoplegia following cardiopulmonary bypass.  Administration of MB was associated with an 8 mmHg increase in mean arterial pressure, with the peak response occurring at 2 hours after completion of dose.

I was moved by this editorial on global health matters in a daily British newspaper by an  academic medical  colleague,  written in response to anticipated changes in the leadership of the  World Health Organisation. It is perhaps time for us surgeons to augment our administrative participation in global healthcare.

The authors write a provocative response to the recent ACGME revisions to duty hours which extend the work hour limitation for first-year residents from 16 to 24hours.  The authors also summarize data in favor of and against duty hour restrictions and emphasize the importance of relying on science when making education policy decisions.

The authors report the use of ECMO in 8 pts who suffered ARDS after pneumonectomy.  Predicted mortality was 80% prior to ECMO institution.  ECMO was weaned in 7 pts and overall hospital survival was 50%.

These authors from Spain retrospectively analyzed a group of 805 patients undergoing isolated heart valve surgery in order to correlate levels of high-sensitivity troponin T (hs-cTnT) and CK-MB with whether a patient experienced a postoperative MI, as diagnosed by EKG and/or TTE.
