The Yale group retrospectively reviewed their experience with DeBakey type I aortic dissections to evaluate whether patients with bovine aortic arches had a unique distribution of entry sites and differential outcomes.  A total of 315 patients were included in the study, of which 49 (16%) had a bovine aortic arch.

A single institution experience is reported for outcomes of aortic allograft use in 353 pts undergoing 92 subcoronary and 261 root replacements.  Hospital mortality was 5.9%.  Mean follow-up was 12 years, during which time 113 pts died.  20-year survival was 41%.  117 pts required valve-related reoperations.  Long-term mortality was related to LV dil

Patients with bicuspid aortic valves have a significantly increased incidence of aortic complications including type A aortic dissection.  The authors studied 1181 patients with bicuspid aortic valves and sinus of valsalva or ascending aortic aneurysms with diameter greater than or equal to 4.7 cm on CT scan or MRI.

Resected aortas associated with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV,n = 60) and trileaflet aortic valve (n = 24) in patients with aortic valve disease were compared with normal diameter aortas from patients undergoing cardiac transplantation (n = 16) by five histologic criteria.
