In this video, the authors present the case of a patient with an extensive thoracic aorta aneurysm, who was treated with a two-stage hybrid approach.

The authors conducted a double-blinded prospective, randomized clinical trial in 249 patients >60 years of age who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass to assess whether interventions based on cerebral oximetry would decrease the incidence of postoperative delirium.  Two groups were compared:  The control group, in which the resul

Talwar and colleagues randomized 100 pediatric patients receiving bidirectional superior cavopulmonary anastomosis to on-cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and off-CPB groups. Significantly lower anastomosis time, postoperative inotropic support, and ICU and hospital stay duration were observed in the off-CPB group.

Mehaffey and colleagues evaluated major adverse events in 118 cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) patients who had received methylene blue (MB) within 72 hours of CPB.
June 19, 2017
The authors present a technique of double superior vena cava cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass venous drainage in minimally invasive aortic valve surgery.
May 23, 2017
The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of 88 patients that received methylene blue (MB) for refractory vasoplegia following cardiopulmonary bypass.  Administration of MB was associated with an 8 mmHg increase in mean arterial pressure, with the peak response occurring at 2 hours after completion of dose.

The authors of this review article offer an approach to the utilization of a contempory mechanical circulatory support devices.  They further provide insights of the key role that well-functioning interdisciplinary teams contribute to the success of a MCS program and future directions to consider as this field continues to rapidly evolve.

This retrospective study compared Celsior (65% of pts) to all-blood continuous myocardial protection (35%) in 631 patients undergoing elective aortic valve replacement.  Troponin T release was lower in Celsior patients, as was the risk of postoperative death (OR 0.33; 0.15 - 0.76).  Other outcomes were similar between the groups.

This single-center study explored the relationship between spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) and the incidence of thromboembolism and CVA in 98 patients undergoing peripheral VA ECMO.  Twenty-two percent of patients had SEC while they were on ECMO.  Those exhibiting SEC had significantly higher rates of intracardiac thrombus (46% v.

Operative and postoperative factors' relationship to intermediate term neurodevelopment were assessed in patients who underwent cardiac surgery on bypass at age 9 mos or less using the Psychomotor Development Index (PMI) and the Mental Development Index (MDI).  Lower PDI and MDI were associated with longer interoperative support time, with use of ECM
