Mitral valve disease

January 4, 2024
The authors used machine learning techniques on twenty-year outcome data from 436 consecutive patients who underwent mitral valve repair over an eighteen-year period. The endpoints were actuarial survival and freedom from moderate or high mitral regurgitation (MR).

In this recording from the 2023 Transcatheter Heart Valves Greece conference, Dr. Stefan Anker, a cardiothoracic surgeon, professor, and researcher at Charite Medical School in Berlin, Germany, gave the meeting’s keynote lecture. He discussed an update in research for TEER for FMR in heart failure patients.

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (MIMVS) is feasible and safe, but its uptake has lagged worldwide. The authors conducted a detailed survey of 75 surgeons, of whom 32 (42 percent) completed the survey. All who completed the survey performed more than 25 MIMVS cases annually.

The use of bioprostheses for mitral valve replacement is well established and steadily increasing worldwide. However, long-term durability is not well described. Accurate mitral valve bioprosthetic durability reports are necessary to set a standard against which transcatheter mitral valve replacement can be compared.

Editor in chief Joel Dunning spoke with Dr. Peyman Sardari Nia during his port-access mitral valve repair training session at the 2023 EACTS annual meeting.

This video demonstrates minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgery performed successfully on a fifty-one-year-old man with mitral regurgitation secondary to a flail P2 segment.
September 28, 2023
This video shows how mitral annular and leaflet calcification can be strategically debrided to allow mitral valve repairs.
September 27, 2023
This video revealed that endoscopic mitral valve repair is an excellent option irrespective of age, and pre-measured chords make mitral valve repair easier and more reproducible for surgeons. Furthermore, Cryoablation is a useful addition in patients with concomitant atrial fibrillation.
September 19, 2023
This video demonstrates how surgical resection of prosthetic valve leaflets under direct vision can be an option for transcatheter mitral valve-in-valve implantation to avoid left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
