Thoracotomy

December 30, 2025
This novel study examined tricuspid annular (TA) remodeling in conscious, awake sheep with functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) using tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy. Fifteen sheep underwent thoracotomy with sonomicrometry crystal implantation around the TA and right ventricular epicardium.

This video presents a 68-year-old male with severe aortic stenosis and triple-vessel coronary artery disease who underwent a totally endoscopic aortic valve replacement combined with left internal mammary artery to left anterior descending artery bypass using a dual minithoracotomy approach.
December 11, 2025
The UK Mini Mitral Trial compared minimally invasive (Mini) mitral valve repair (MVr) to conventional sternotomy in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation. The primary objective was to assess physical function (PF) recovery, using the Short Form 36-Item Health Survey, version 2 (SF-36v2) PF scale 12 weeks post-surgery.

This video demonstrates a patient who underwent a Bentall procedure via a minimally invasive right anterior minithoracotomy.
October 16, 2025
This study analyzed 159 patients with mediastinal benign teratomas across five hospitals from 2014–2024, comparing subxiphoid thoracoscopic surgery with other surgical approaches. Among the 26 patients undergoing subxiphoid surgery, the median operative time was 80 minutes with 20mL of blood loss and 100 percent complete resection rates.
October 2, 2025
This study analyzed data from the UK Mini Mitral trial, which compared recovery in patients undergoing either a sternotomy or a minimally invasive thoracoscopically-guided right minithoracotomy procedure for mitral valve repair, using wrist-worn triaxial accelerometers to track physical activity and sleep.
September 25, 2025
This video demonstrates a detailed technique to close the left atrial appendage through a right minithoracotomy.
September 23, 2025
This video demonstrates that repeat right axillary thoracotomy is safe and feasible, even in redo settings, as it maintains cosmetic superiority and facilitates rapid functional recovery while achieving the anatomical repair as needed.
September 11, 2025
Robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery provides significant advantages for complex pulmonary resections such as high-definition 3D visualization and enhanced precision, resulting in reduced morbidity and quicker recovery compared to open thoracotomy.
September 11, 2025
This single-center study assessed the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive total arterial off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG) via left minithoracotomy in obese patients (BMI ≥30) compared to nonobese controls. Among 279 patients (2015–2023), 56 were obese.
