This study evaluated the surgical and oncological results of RATS thymectomy to demonstrate the approach as technically safe with acceptable outcomes. Of 669 patients, complete thymectomy was performed in 98 percent of cases and in 8.5 percent of those cases, resection of surrounding structures was undertaken.

Minimally invasive surgery is routinely used for thymectomies, and techniques continue to evolve. Yang developed and studied a modified subxiphoid approach for thymectomy utilizing VATS with a sternal retractor to improve visualization in the operative field.
