ASAIO 2025 | DCD Hearts Improve LVAD Patient Survival
In June 2025, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs assembled leading cardiothoracic surgeons to share insights and expertise on advanced topics in cardiothoracic surgery. Watch for more ASAIO 2025 videos in the coming weeks.
At the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) 2025 Annual Conference, Dr. Yeahwa Hong, a surgical resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, presented on “Utilization of Hearts Donated After Circulatory Death Improves All-Cause Survival in Candidates With Durable Left Ventricular Assist Device.”
He discussed the 2018 Heart Allocation Policy change and the outcomes that followed this shift, which led him and his colleagues to create a retrospective cohort study using the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) registry database. Dr. Hong’s research aimed to examine the impact of donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors on waitlist outcomes for patients with durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). He elaborated on the study’s design, clinical trends, and the implications for transplantation, delisting, and overall survival rates
