In June 2025, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs assembled leading cardiothoracic surgeons to share insights and expertise on advanced topics in cardiothoracic surgery. Watch for more ASAIO 2025 videos in the coming weeks.
At the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) 2025 Annual Conference, Dr. Randall C. Sterling, a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the Kaufman Center for Heart Failure Treatment and Recovery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, delivered a presentation titled “My Personal Journey With MCS: History and Milestones.”
Dr. Sterling explored significant historical moments and key innovators in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. He highlighted the comparative systematic and regional hemodynamic effects of dopamine and dobutamine in patients with cardiomyopathic heart failure, the first heart transplant in August 1986, and the history of the Cleveland Clinic.
Additionally, he discussed the REMATCH trial, the HeartMate II trial for left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), the REVIVE-IT pilot trial, and LVAD therapy. Dr. Sterling also addressed adjunctive pharmacologic therapy and the challenges associated with research on phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5-I) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS).
