The utility of dental extraction for infection prior to planned cardiac surgery is unkown. The authors evaluated the risk of dental extraction in a group of 205 patients for whom elective cardiac surgery was planned. 8% experienced major morbidity after dental extraction, 3% died prior to cardiac surgery, and 3% died following cardiac surgery.

Patients requiring readmission after cardiac surgery were compared to time-matched patients who did not require readmission to evaluate factors associated with this adverse event. Predictors of readmission included COPD, decreased EF, prolonged length of stay, and lower educational level.

The authors report on patients with a small aortic annulus who underwent aortic root replacement using self-assembled valve composite grafts with prosthesis larger than aortic annulus. This technique resulted in excellent haemodynamic and good neo-root durability at long-term follow-up.

In this single centre retrospective review, the authors in a multivariable analysis determined the surgeon was a predictor of blood loss after cardiac surgery. Despite much research, bleeding and blood use remains an issue after cardiac surgery. Each surgeon should examine their own techniques to minimise bleeding risk.
