The authors present the case of a 20-year-old woman who underwent uniportal VATS for treatment of a large hydatid cyst. The video shows the preoperative work-up, the operative steps of the procedure, and the postoperative outcome. Disclaimer The information and views presented on CTSNet.org represent the views of the authors and contributors of the…
In this video, the second in a seven-part series, Tristan Yan demonstrates a technique for peripheral venous and central aortic cannulation for the Mini-Bentall and hemiarch procedure. A vacuum-assist device is built in the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit (CPB) to maximize venous drainage. Peripheral venous cannulation is established first, using the Seldinger technique. The femoral vein…
The thoracic outlet is an anatomically challenging location for thoracic surgeons due to the bony obstructions and the compact anatomy of great vessels and nerves. The authors demonstrate their technique for the resection of a schwannoma on the thoracic outlet. Two patients are presented.
Peter Licht of Odense University Hospital, Denmark, discusses the increasing use of the VATS approach in general thoracic surgery, and considers potential future developments. This presentation was originally given during the SCTS Ionescu University program at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. This content is published…
This video shows a robotic lingulectomy and lymphadenectomy in a 62-year-old non-smoker with a history of Dukes’ B colorectal adenocarcinoma. The surgeon begins by dissecting the inferior pulmonary ligament, where the station 9 lymph nodes were dissected and sampled. The station 7 lymph nodes were then dissected. The surgeon then moved into the anterior oblique…
In this video, the first in a seven-part series, Tristan Yan demonstrates how to perform a mini-sternotomy via a 5 cm access incision. The body surface anatomy is clearly marked with a marking pen, depicting the positions of the supra-sternal notch, sterno-manubrial junction, second to fourth intercostal spaces, the inferior extent of xiphoid cartilage, and…
Originally presented as a STSA/CTSNet Surgical Motion Picture at the 2016 STSA Annual Meeting. Objectives: The therapeutic approach for advanced stage lung cancer is controversial, specifically in the surgical management of tumors invading the great vessels and mediastinum. The authors present a case in which they performed a left upper lobectomy and sleeve resection of…
What does a surgeon look like? The #ILookLikeASurgeon campaign on Twitter, which was started in 2015 by surgical resident Heather Logghe, shows that women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people can all look like surgeons. In this roundtable, panelists discuss the origins of the social media movement and where it is headed. Mara Antonoff of…
Thierry Carrel of University Hospital Bern, Switzerland, discusses outcomes of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, and explores the possible contraindications of minimally invasive approaches. This presentation was originally given during the SCTS Ionescu University program at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. This content is published…
VATS can be used for a variety of thoracic procedures. Here the author demonstrates the technique for first rib resection. The procedure starts with three 5mm ports, with the inferior port converted at the end for rib extraction. A single lumen endotracheal tube is used with CO2 insufflation to create intrathoracic space. An angled 5…
The authors present the case of a neonate who developed mitral valve infective endocarditis. Despite aggressive antibiotic therapy, his clinical condition worsened and increased inotropic support was needed. The patient underwent salvage infective vegetation removal and mitral valve plasty of the posterior leaflet.
This video demonstrates a “hemi-commando” procedure in a 64-year-old female patient with aortic root abscess involving the intervalvular fibrosa. The hemi-commando procedure is a feasible treatment option for invasive double-valve endocarditis, and has the advantage of mitral valve preservation.
Pala Rajesh of Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, UK, argues that VATS sympathectomy is a useful procedure that contains clinical value for patients with thoracic sympathetic blockade. Dr. Rajesh discusses the background and methodology for VATS sympathectomy, and demonstrates his technique. This presentation was originally given during the SCTS Ionescu University program at the 2016 Annual Meeting…
An international group of experts met at the 2017 STS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, to discuss the evolving practice of robotic and hybrid coronary revascularization. Pavan Atluri of the University of Pennsylvania is joined by Husam Balkhy of the University of Chicago, Eric Lehr of Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute, Johannes Bonatti of Cleveland…
Chest tube insertion is a procedure commonly performed by residents and fellows throughout their general and cardiothoracic surgical training. Proper placement of a chest tube can effectively evacuate air, fluid, and blood. In many cases, insertion of a chest tube can prevent more invasive procedures. This video will demonstrate tips and tricks for the successful…
